How the Hooplytix Index works
The Hooplytix Index (HI) is one number that scores the basketball you decided to value. It is not a league rating and it is not comparable between clubs that use different weights.
The formula
For every custom event in scope, multiply how many times it was tagged by the weight you assigned. Add those products. That sum is HI.
HI = Σ (count_of_event × value_of_event)
- Weights can be positive (reward) or negative (penalty), including tenths (for example +1.5 or −0.5).
- Only custom events contribute.
- The seventeen locked defaults (shots, rebounds, assists, and the rest of the box score) never feed HI.
- If nothing custom is tagged, HI is empty for that player, five, or team.
Worked example
Three custom events on a team season:
| Event | Weight |
|---|---|
| Extra pass | +2 |
| Deflection | +1 |
| Bad closeout | −1 |
In one game a player records 5 extra passes, 4 deflections and 2 bad closeouts:
| Event | Calculation | Contribution |
|---|---|---|
| Extra pass | 5 × 2 | +10 |
| Deflection | 4 × 1 | +4 |
| Bad closeout | 2 × (−1) | −2 |
| HI | 12 | |
The same arithmetic applies to an exact five-man lineup and to the whole team — only the tags inside that row’s scope are counted.
What a custom event stores
- Name
- Acronym (up to four characters)
- Category
- Index weight (signed)
- Optional description
Weights belong to one team and season (with a competition scope in the product). Change a weight and later totals follow the new value.
Where you read it
- Game tables for team, players and lineups
- Season analytics (totals and per-game averages)
- Player and lineup profiles and game logs
- Each custom event also as its own count column next to HI — so a 12 is never a black box
What stays in the box score
Points, field goals, free throws, rebounds, assists, steals, blocks, turnovers, fouls, plus-minus, valuation and the advanced rates (eFG%, TS%, ORTG, DRTG, NRTG, and the rest) stay in their own columns. Those numbers describe the game. HI describes how closely the game matched the standard you wrote.
